Geology Field Trip-Hållö, SW Part Tva

Monday 4/13/15

Early morning to see the sunrise! It was Sidney's first real watching the sun rise. We completed the day later by watching the sun set on the opposite side. The students were divided into five teams and each were given a portion of the island. We measured cracks caused by shifting tectonic plates, striations or scratches in the rock from the glacier, p-forms which are any smooth pits caused by the ice and crescentic gouges which were caused by rocks being carried along by the ice and then chipping out the bedrock. It was a beautiful sunny day for some mapping. After the field research we compiled our notes and discovered the glacier was going about 200 degrees from North.

While we were out doing field work I managed to drop my phone in the North Sea…luckily it was in an alcove so I was able to go in after it. Unluckily the salt water still destroyed it. Guess it can't be lucky twice. My phone survived a dunk in the toilet in Minneapolis during orientation. Hannah is letting me borrow her iPod for a camera thankfully!

After a hard day of work we 'relaxed' by swimming. Half of us braved the cold water and jumped into the alcove of the North Sea. It was cold but actually swimmable. We even found a little cliff to jump off of.

Thumper measuring a crack. We used a compass to tell what direction precisely the cracks go.

Erin standing in a pothole. Potholes are formed by a whirlpool of water caused by the glacier. There are huge ones in the Minnesota measuring 12 feet wide or so.
