Field trip! Onsdag 3/11/15

We had another geology field trip on wednesday. First we stopped at the old porfyr factory. Porfyr is a metamorphic rock that is common to Dalarna. During the 1800s and 1900s, the porfyr vases and jewelry were famous. The Swedish king gave it as presents to other world royalty.

The rest of the week we spent studying for our Nordic Politics final and writing our final papers.

Stone drill. The factory operated until the 1970s. It ran on hydropower which led to a slow process of cutting and drilling.

Porfyr Urn with Bronze from France where they use to make the death row prisoners work with the Bronze because the fumes were so toxic.

  1. porfyr - must be the same as our prophyry - an igneous rock with phenocrysts in a matrix; so how old is the second oldest cabin in Sweden, and how do they even know it is the second oldest?

  2. Oh, I forgot - that stonecutting factory looks super cool! and, I suppose a metamorphic rock can also be a porphyry so long as it has the right texture.

  3. It is the same as porphyry! They know its the second oldest i'm guessing through dating the wood. Its from the 1280s.
