Visby Part Tre

Sunday 5/17/15

Bicycle Adventure! Hannah, Pat and I packed our lunches, grabbed our bicycles and headed north along the coast. We biked through a camp ground and over a little wooden bridge. Soon the path became too overgrown and rocky to bike so we abandoned our bikes. It was suppose to rain but the sun shone all day and it turned into one of my favorite days in Sweden. Here is what we found...

The whole coast of the island is covered in WW2 bunkers. There were Russian jets flying overhead while we were in Visby making those bunkers seem not so out of date.

We came across a cute little stone archway and hut where we ended up leaving our bicycles. Here we also collected some marine fossils. The whole island use to be a coral reef so now there are fossils everywhere.

After the archway we took a stone stair case up to who knows! We decided good life wisdom is "always take the stone steps"

And up those steps we found this! It appears to be a run down villa someone is trying to restore. No one was around while we snooped by. The grounds were covered with statues and flowers. It was devastatingly beautiful in its disheveled and charming state.

A view into the villa's garden.

Next we found the Brucebo Nature Reserve!

There was a stone wall that marked the beginning of the reserve.

On top of the world. We had no trail map and so decided to pick random paths. Luckily the path we chose led us to the top of the cliff and we got a breathtaking view.

At night we watched Through The Glass Darkly by the Swedish film director Ingmar Bergman in preparation for our day trip later in the week where we visit his museum and where many of his films were shot.

Monday 5/18/15

We spent the day working on our final projects, meeting with our professor to discuss the semester and at night we had a lecture by Roland about Ingmar Bergman. More about him will be discussed later.

Tuesday 5/19/15

We went back to the University and learned more about wind power on the island. Afterwards we had a barbecue with the international students along the shore. I learned how to play the Swedish lawn game of Kubb. It involves throwing wooden logs at wooden blocks to knock them over but it is more complicated than that…I just threw at whatever my teammates told me to.

Britta and Erin played with one of the student's sons who loved to make towers out of the Kubb pieces and knock it over.

At the barbecue.
